Floyd Mayweather, former world champion in five different divisions, will face John Gotti III, grandson of a New York mafia boss, this Saturday in an exhibition fight that will mark the debut of ‘Money’ in Mexico.
At the Mexico City Arena in the capital, ‘Pretty Boy’ will try to show that at 47 years old he maintains the quality that allowed him to remain undefeated in 50 fights in his professional career.
The fight is a rematch of their 2023 encounter that ended in the sixth-round when referee Kenny Bayless called an end to the fight due to excessive trash talking. The referee had a difficult time getting the two to break up their clinches and there was a brawl inside the ring involving members of both teams.
It is the second time Mayweather, widely regarded as one of the greatest pound for pound boxers in history, will face Gotti III after the previous fight was stopped after six rounds in his favour.
However, the end of the fight in Florida, backed by a raucous pro-Gotti crowd, saw a mass brawl between the two camps with punches being thrown as the fighters left the ring. The shocking scenes followed an ill-tempered fight where insults were traded between the fighters in the early rounds.
Since his retirement in 2017, Mayweather has remained active with exhibition fights in different parts of the world, in which he has challenged some rivals with experience in mixed martial arts and figures from social networks.
Among his most iconic fights in this new stage of the Olympic bronze medalist in Atlanta 1996 was the February 2021 fight against YouTuber Logan Paul, who is now a WWE fighter.
If there were odds to this fight they'd be heavily in Mayweather's favor. There's always the chance that the 47-year-old Mayweather is going to take one of these exhibition bouts and really show his age at some point.
It really doesn't feel like this will be one of those times, though.
They are running this match back, but it isn't because the first one was close. The fight wasn't officially scored, but MMA Fighting had Mayweather up five rounds to none in the first fight before it was stopped in the sixth.
Gotti, the grandson of American crime boss John Gotti, has tried to make a name for himself in the combat sports arena for a while. He is 5-1 as a mixed martial arts and has won two professional boxing matches.
That being said, there's still a massive difference between Gotti's skill in the ring and Mayweather's.
What had to frustrate Gotti is what makes Mayweather so good at these exhibition bouts while he's approaching 50 years old. His defense, which was his calling card in his prime, remains very good.
It's that defense that allows Mayweather to control these exhibition bouts.
Expect him to take the same approach in this one. He'll take a cautious approach in the early rounds, allow Gotti to entertain the crowd with some offense, but Mayweather will be able to turn up the heat whenever he wants to.
The duel against Gotti III will be a rematch of the exhibition clash they had in June 2023 in Florida, in which the referee stopped the fight in the sixth round, before the eight agreed rounds had been completed, because both boxers engaged in a verbal war throughout the battle that could not be controlled.
Gotti, who's the grandson of the late New York mob boss John Gotti, was adjudged to have lost the first exhibition match but will get another chance.
It may come as a surprise that the two are facing off again in Mexico City this weekend.
Mayweather is officially retired from boxing after a perfect winning record in his 50 fights. He has since taken part in a number of highly-paid exhibition fights. Nicknamed ‘money’ he has been vocal about taking part in exhibitions that pay huge amounts for him to return to the ring.
Meanwhile 31-year-old former MMA fighter Gotti has 16 years on his opponent he has just two professional fights to his name, winning both.
The fight will be contested over six rounds in the Light Heavyweight division, which means the weight limit will be 175 pounds (12.5 stone or 79.4 kg) but will not count towards professional fight stats.
So maybe sometimes your nerves may get the best of you, but the thing is, we’ve been there, I’ve seen it,” Gotti continued. “I know what to expect. I’ve felt Floyd’s punches, I’ve seen him move. He’s still got it at 47 years-old and mentally, for a year, I’ve been preparing for that style. We have to get in the trenches here and fight. There is no other way. If he has to get knocked out; If I have to get knocked out, so be it. It has to happen. Whatever is gonna happen is gonna happen.
He boasts an unbeaten professional record of 50 fights with 27 knockouts and championship titles including WBC super-featherweight, IBF welterweight and WBA light-middleweight. He is going up against 31-year-old Gotti III, who has two fights under his belt since making the switch from MMA, both of which he won including one by knockout.
Mayweather and Gotti’s first matchup was one of the more chaotic scenes in recent combat sports history. After five rounds of action that predominantly featured Mayweather showboating and taunting, Gotti became frustrated and began trash-talking Mayweather, with things escalating between the two to the point that referee Kenny Bayless stopped the bout due to the trash talk.
The two Americans will no doubt come out swinging when they come face-to-face once again as part of the night’s seven-fight card. Mayweather, 47, is widely regarded as one of the greatest to ever grace the sport and has won a raft of belts across his glittering 28-year career.
